In Batman Begins (2005), during Bruce Wayne's childhood, he experienced 2 PTSD that really affect his personality. The first is when he fell down into the well and attacked by the bats. Because of that he has a fear of bat. It cause the second PTSD which is the death of his parents. When he and his parents was watching a play, there were a scene with bats in it, so he was so scared and asked his parents to go out. After they went out, then there was a robber who rob them and killed Bruce's parents in front of him. So he felt guilty and felt responsible for his parents death. But he chose to overcome his fear and to bring justice, so that no one will experience the traumatic incident that he experienced. When people experiencing this kind of PTSD, it often calls into question the basic fundamental belief that they have, so this could be a trauma that could bring either positive or negative effect towards the growth of the particular character. In Bruce Wayne's case, he chose to overcome his fear, using the psychologic technic to overcome his fear called exposure, exposing himself towards the bats in the bats cave.
He also use the bats, as a symbol of fear, to frighten his enemies, sharing his previous dreads.
Then again, as this question has been asked to other superheroes, so this will be asked to batman, who is the real identity of Batman? There are 3 types of personalities, Bruce as a playboy billionaire, Bruce as a normal person, not as the playboy billionaire, and Batman. I think that Batman is not his real identity, but Bruce as a normal person is the real one. He used Batman as a tool to accomplished the Gotham City that he wanted to be. And Bruce as a playboy billionaire is just a mask to hide his true identity.
Another question was what make him a superhero? He does not posses any super power like Spiderman or Superman. He just a normal guy with a good fighting combat and intelligence, and helped by his super gadget. One think that makes him more than any other human, his super power is his self discipline and self control. If we have self control like him, maybe we could be Batman. But Batman also feels very human, as we can see that he always need help from Fox, Commissioner Gordon and his fellow assistant, Alfred. Even in comic he is helped by Oracle, Gordon's daughter.
